Under 18 Inter Area Team - Victory
report from Colin Philip
On Saturday, 3rd November, the
Lanarkshire Under 18 Team won the Scottish Intermediate Inter
Area Championships, held in the National Badminton
Academy, Scotstoun, Glasgow.
Teams from various areas of Scotland including the North East, Edinburgh and the west of Scotland entered.
Lanarkshire started with a massive 10-0
thumping of Mid and East Lothian.
We then followed that up with a decisive 8-2 victory over
the Edinburgh Schools’ side.
Having taken care of last season’s winners and runner up,
the Team Managers gave a huge sigh of relieve as they were the
two teams that had worried them before hand.
These wins were then followed by an 8-2 win over the
North East and finally a 7-3 win over the West of Scotland team.
Full credit must go to the Team who all
played exceptionally well throughout the day.
This was one of the first times that Lanarkshire had
managed to get close to getting their best team, out as usually
some of our better players aren’t available.
What a difference it made - as the other Area teams will
now undoubtedly testify.
should also go to the Team Managers Ross and Colin who not only
tactically got the Team’s playing order correct, they somehow or
other very successfully managed to hide their huge smiles after
beating, sorry change that to destroying, Lanarkshire’s close
rivals Mid and East Lothian.
This was the first time Lanarkshire has
won the event since 2006. For the second year in a row, the
Edinburgh Schools side finished in runners up spot.

Report from Colin Philip
Saturday and Sunday, 21 and 22 September, the Lanarkshire Under
19 Team took part in the Anglo Scottish Inter-Area Competition
that, for the first time ever was held in the Tyneside Badminton
Centre. This is a
new purpose built Centre that has just opened.
A huge improvement from the tired courts at Ashington!
In fact, the new facility has even got a café.
Because of call offs and the unavailability of some players,
we were left with a pretty young side, particularly compared to
some of the other teams who brought players who wouldn’t have
looked out of place in a senior Area Team.
In fact, our Under 19 team comprised two 14 year olds,
four 15 year olds, five 16 year olds and a 17 year old.
matches were very tough and our youngsters struggled to get many
They all played well and gave
their 100%, but were getting out powered by the much older and
highly ranked players.
we won some individual matches, we just couldn’t get close to
overall beating the Areas we played against on the Saturday.
However, on the Sunday, our luck seemed
to change a bit and we managed to get some better results under
our belt. We played
To everyone’s surprise, for whatever reason, we started
exceptionally well winning 3 of the 6 singles.
That must have been the confidence booster the team
needed and before we knew it, we had totally demolished
Next up (and our last match of the
weekend) was the West of Scotland (also referred to as the Rest
of Scotland!). After
a slow start we again picked up a few victories and were getting
excited about the prospects of another win …… before losing 8-7.
So, overall, we ended up in 4th
position in the event which, bearing in mind the age of our
players was probably as good as we could have expected.

Report from Colin Philip
Lanarkshire Senior Team headed north to Perth on 3 November 2012
to compete in the Senior Inter Area Competition that was being
held in the Bells Sports Centre.
Even though it was
November, it was a lovely sunny day helping the Team get into a
good positive frame of mind for the matches that awaited them.
We knew in advance that a couple of Teams had withdrawn
because they couldn’t raise enough players. Unfortunately, the
Borders were one of these Teams that weren’t travelling - which
was a shame as they occasionally bring quite a weak Team - a
great match to start with in an Inter Area, as a win always
helps melt away any nerves players may have.
The City of
Edinburgh Team arrived with what looked like a bunch of pretty
strong players. Pretty? On second thoughts, maybe not pretty
-lets just say strong! Another strong Team arrived and we all
thought “Oh for the Borders”!!
As you would expect,
every one of the Lanarkshire players gave their all in the first
match we played, which was against Edinburgh - who eventually
ran out reasonably convincing winners. By the time we played Mid
and East Lothian, the Lanarkshire players had licked their
wounds and were all pumped up and raring to go. Unfortunately,
we were again pipped at the post by a much stronger Team.
Nevertheless, despite a real gallant effort, we ended up
finishing in 3rd place on the day. Well done all.
