Report from Colin Philip

On Saturday and Sunday, 1 and 2 February, the Lanarkshire Primary Team took part in the Anglo Scottish League Competition that was again held in the Ashington Leisure Centre.

This year, there were 6 teams competing: Borders, Cumbria, Lanarkshire, Lothian, Tyne and Wear and Yorkshire.

This year, our Team selection was made up of a young and very enthusiastic team of 6 girls and 7 boys.  We decided to take 7 rather than 6 boys because a couple of our boys were only 8 years old.  It had been suggested that because they were so young, they may tire a bit if they were to play every match throughout the weekend.  As a result, Ross and I brought in a 7th boy to prevent the Ďwee onesí playing too often.  Albeit, weíre still waiting for them to show even a tiny bit of tiredness - even at night time.

Anyway, on the Saturday, we played Yorkshire, the Borders and Cumbria and on the Sunday we played Lothian and Tyne and Wear.  Some of the teams were very strong and experienced - and admittedly we did struggle a bit.  However, unlike them, the majority of our team will all be eligible next year Ė whereas their players will be too old.

We ended up in 5th place which, bearing in mind the playersí ages and their limited competitive playing experience, I think was nevertheless a great result.  There were some absolutely fantastic individual results throughout which Ross and I just didnít see coming and which I know the players were very proud of.  Overall, even if the team didnít get a top three spot, the fantastic team spirit and one of the biggest travelling supports ever to hit Ashington, made the weekend a total success.

Look out Ashington, next season our team will be older, stronger, more experienced and, more importantly, better!  Looking forward to it already .....

Report from Colin Philip

On Saturday and Sunday, 13 and 14 April, the Lanarkshire Primary Team took part in the Anglo Scottish Inter-Area Competition that was held in the Ashington Leisure Centre.

This year, there were 6 teams competing: Lanarkshire, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Tyne and Wear, Yorkshire, Lothian and Borders.

Our Team selection was made up of an enthusiastic team of 6 girls and 6 boys.  Unfortunately, because we couldnít get 6 Primary girls, we had to take 2 over age girls.  Because the two girls were over age, their games didnít count which was disappointing as they hardly lost a match all weekend.  Nevertheless, it was a great experience for them.  However, even conceding these matches every time, this didnít dampen the teamís enthusiasm at all.

On the Saturday, we played Yorkshire, the Borders and Cumbria and on the Sunday we played Lothian and Tyne and Wear.  Even though we were giving a few games away against every team, the Lanarkshire youngsters played exceptionally well and never once gave up.

At the end of the weekend, we ended up in 5th place which, bearing in mind all of our results didnít count, was, in my opinion, a great result.
